Ebook About
Weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction, Sara Donati’s epic novel sweeps us into another time and place . . . and into a breathtaking story of love and survival in a land of savage beauty. It is December of 1792. Elizabeth Middleton leaves her comfortable English estate to join her family in a remote New York mountain village. It is a place unlike any she has ever experienced. And she meets a man unlike any she has ever encountered—a white man dressed like a Native American: Nathaniel Bonner, known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. Determined to provide schooling for all the children of the village, Elizabeth soon finds herself locked in conflict with the local slave owners as well as with her own family. Interweaving the fate of the Mohawk Nation with the destiny of two lovers, Sara Donati’s compelling novel creates a complex, profound, passionate portait of an emerging America. Praise for Into the Wilderness“My favorite kind of book is the sort you live in, rather than read. Into the Wilderness is one of those rare stories that let you breathe the air of another time, and leave your footprints on the snow of a wild, strange place. I can think of no better adventure than to explore the wilderness in the company of such engaging and independent lovers as Elizabeth and her Nathaniel.”—Diana Gabaldon“Each time you open a book you hope to discover a story that will make your spirit of adventure and romance sing. This book delivers on that promise.”—Amanda Quick“A beautiful tale of both romance and survival…Here is the beauty as well as the savagery of the wilderness and, at the core of it all, the compelling story of the love of a man and a woman, both for the untamed land and for one another.”—Allan W. Eckert“Lushly written . . . Exemplary historical fiction.”Kirkus Reviews“Epic in scope, emotionally intense.”BookPage

Book Into the Wilderness: A Novel Review :

I have never read anything by this author. This book was in my recommendations and I took a chance. It looked interesting and had lots of good reviews. It began well enough with great chemistry between the lead characters in the The heroine was likable and admirable and the plot, although predictable, was a good one. The author did a good job of taking you into the time period and setting up the conflict in the story. A third of the way through the book I encountered a fairly descriptive sex scene, skipped over it hoping that would not be a pattern. A couple of chapters later encountered another one. Obviously this was going to be the norm for the rest of the book so I quit reading and did not finish it. I prefer clean romances and this one is not one. If you like a clean read, move on.
I first read this book when it came out in mass market paperback and I discovered it in the romance section of my local Border's Books. I'd actually worked in that exact same Border's while I was in college and romance was one of the genres I was responsible for stocking and keeping organized, so I spent a lot of time in those same shelves, combing through the good, the bad and the terrible that romance had to offer. This day I was looking for a good book to read just for some fun and escape. Wilderness caught my attention first because of the sunny yellow cover and the fact that it was a nice fat paperback, which is like finding gold if the story is good. Unfortunately, most book lovers have had to learn the hard way that heft isn't always a indicator that the story within is wonderful, but I was willing to give it a chance. I had also read the book, and then later watched, and watched again, the film version of Last of the Mohicans, so the tie-ins to that original story and those characters intrigued me and I bought this novel and started reading that very evening. I didn't sleep that first night because the book was so good I just couldn't bring myself to put it down!! I immediately felt like I was there in Paradise with all the characters. The author wove a spell with her words, that's really the only way I can describe it. I felt the cold and heat of the seasons changing in the town of Paradise, and saw the landscape around me green and rolling, unmarred by the industry and pollution of modern times. It was a wonderful escape, this book. I was so thrilled by it that I convinced both of my two sisters, my small circle of friends and many of my work colleagues to read it too. Those closest to me borrowed my paperback copy and it quickly began to fall apart, so as soon as the cover fell off I ordered the hardcover from Amazon. Thank goodness I did because I seriously re-read this book EVERY SINGLE YEAR. I write the month and date of each read inside the front cover to keep track of how many times I've read it, for my own enjoyment, and also to remind me of that first spectacular read when the story was completely new to me and every page was exciting because it opened up more of that incredible world to me.I went on to read all the books in Donati's Wilderness series, as well as the few other novels she's since written. I have them all in hardcover now too on the one bookshelf where I keep only my most beloved books, but Into the Wilderness will always be my favorite because it was the book that started the journey. I'll forever be grateful that someone as talented as the author invested herself in that endeavor in order to give us the gift of this amazing story.
